How Does it Work to Place a Crown on a Tooth?

With crown placement, it is necessary that there is a strong foundation for the crown to be retained. Therefore if there is a significant amount of decay or missing tooth structure, a large filling is placed on the tooth to provide an adequate structure for the crown to be retained. This is often referred to as a “core” or “build-up.” After there is enough of a foundation the tooth is then prepared to an ideal shape for best holding that crown. Next, an impression will be obtained of the tooth allowing us to have a model of exactly what that tooth looks like so that a crown can be custom-made to exactly fit your prepared tooth. The crown materials include ceramic, porcelain, gold, or metal alloys depending on the overall conditions of the specific tooth. Gold and metal are ideal for situations requiring more durability, while porcelain and ceramic provide a more natural appearance.

Replacing a tooth in an empty space between two teeth is easily done by a similar process. The two teeth that neighbor the space are prepared for crowns in the same manner as a crown for a single tooth. These teeth are considered the abutment teeth that connect and hold the foundation for the tooth that holds the space between them, otherwise known as a pontic. If there is a need to replace more than one tooth, there are certain conditions that allow for a bridge to replace multiple teeth while still only using two teeth for abutments.
